WATCH: “Young people have paid a huge price during this crisis… it’s only fair to get them back to university” – Dowden
“It’s important for students not to have to give up a year of their life by not going to university”.
“It’s important for students not to have to give up a year of their life by not going to university”.
The Education Secretary must make sure that: “young people can receive their education and they can get the testing that they now deserve”.
“The risk areas were first year students within halls of residents as well as face to face teaching”, says Professor Mark Woolhouse, an epidemiologist.
That way “immunity is built up in the population, which then brings the risk of infections down… to those who are vulnerable to Covid.”
“People should follow the guidance, but there’s a lot of confusion out there,” says the Shadow Culture Secretary.
“I don’t think it’s helpful at this stage – three months away – to speculate” on what will happen at universities, says the Culture Secretary.
“We don’t really want a rebellion; we’re trying to support the Government in getting this done by saying ‘let us vote on these measures'”.
“Our task now is to move to the next stage of our economic plan, nurturing the recovery by protecting jobs through the difficult winter months.”
“He should pay tribute to the Chancellor and his work”, says the Prime Minister to Starmer at today’s PMQs.
The Prime Minister makes his case to the nation for his latest package of measures – and the clampdown they bring.
“We will only be able to avoid this if our new measures work and our behaviour changes…for the time being, this virus is a fact of our lives.”
Six thousand people a day are getting the virus in and this rise in cases is “translating into an increase in hospitalisation”.
He says Coronavirus is “more virulent than flu” and mortality rates will be “significantly greater”.
By contrast, he says that he would call the police to report a neighbour who wasn’t self-isolating.
He repeatedly insists that “this isn’t the choice”, and says the Government shouldn’t be proposing to break international law.
