Many congratulations to Carrie Symonds and Boris Johnson on the birth of their son. He is the first child born to a sitting Prime Minister since Samantha and David Cameron’s youngest child, Florence, born at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro in August 2010.

Last night, journalists were mystified that no word came from Number Ten about whether Johnson would take Prime Minister’s Questions today, and some wondered whether he was trying to disconcert the new Leader of the Opposition, Sir Keir Starmer.

It turns out that Johnson had an altogether happier reason for missing PMQs. At a time of gloom and doom, Symonds and Johnson have brought a smile to people’s faces; have shown in the most heartening way that life goes on.
