We tried putting in the most inventive pro-Soft Brexit backbencher (Dominic Grieve), a committed House of Commons man (Charles Walker) and a former Minister who has taken to doing outside government what he did within it – that’s to say, rescuing Downing Street in its hour of need (Oliver Letwin).
But there was only ever going to be one winner in this category. Step forward, Jacob Rees-Mogg. Vox populi, vox Dei. We detect a bit of enthusiasm in the write-ins for Ken Clarke and Anna Soubry (though not very much).
