Earlier today James Forsyth noted that The Times had not written a leading article on ‘Yachtgate’; a story it had splashed on its front page for three successive days.

Back from a short holiday the Chief Leader Writer, Danny Finkelstein has written that the whole thing had been a "non scandal".  His newspaper has given a "non scandal" a lot of coverage.  Daniel, a personal friend of Mr Osborne, is quite right, of course, to be so dismissive of his newspaper’s behaviour.  This has been a bad week for The Times – reminiscent of its late 1990s campaign against Michael Ashcroft.  Headlines and stories worthy of The Mirror have crept on to its pages.  The big question is ‘Why?’.  We weren’t aware that Tom Baldwin had returned.

9.45pm: Daniel Finkelstein has replied.
