An interesting post on yesterday’s UK Polling Report examined how the public see themselves on a left-right scale.  It is based on Friday’s Telegraph/ YouGov poll.  The public who see themselves as very slightly on the right-of-centre see Tony Blair almost exactly in the same ideological position as themselves.  David Cameron is seen as much to the right but not as right as Tory MPs are seen, or as Michael Howard was seen.  Gordon Brown is perceived as a much more left-wing figure than Tony Blair.

LefttorightA bigger question is, perhaps, whether right and left mean anything much anymore.  Is David Cameron’s new ‘Built To Last’ values statement of the left or the right?  ConservativeHome’s definition of ‘right and left’ suggests that new distinctions are, perhaps, more relevant in politics…

Centralism versus localism…
Hawks versus doves…
Idealism versus managerialism…
National sovereignty versus multilateralism…
Traditional values versus social liberalism…
