Five years ago, the TaxPayers’ Alliance reported that “in the last year, five times more Labour people were appointed to public bodies than Tories”.

Since then, the figures have varied, and some Conservative members or supporters have been selected to fill important posts. 

Nonetheless, it remains the case that, since it took office in 2010, our Party has punched beneath its weight when it comes to public appointments. One of the reasons seems to be that Tories simply don’t apply in the same number as Labour supporters.

To help remedy this, every week we put up links to some of the main public appointments vacancies, so that qualified Conservatives might be aware of the opportunities presented.

NHS England – Non-Executive Director

“The primary role of Non-Executive Directors is, as a team, to lead in developing the strategy for, and overseeing the work of NHS England by participating fully in the work of the board, both in the context of the board meetings themselves, and more widely. Non-Executive Directors also play a part in representing NHS England externally, alongside the Chief Executive, the Chair and the Executive Director team. The responsibilities of the Non-Executive Directors of NHS England are: working with the Chair and the Executive Board to develop NHS England’s strategy to ensure that it carries out its statutory responsibilities and delivers its mandate, meeting its targets and objectives, and ensuring that the Executive Team is held to account for doing so…”

British Council – Deputy Chair to the Board of Trustees

“Working as a team with the Chair and other Trustees the Deputy Chair will: ensure that the British Council has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction; hold the Executive responsible for delivering these; take responsibility for the organisation’s performance and for its corporate behaviour; ensure that the British Council complies with all legal, regulatory and financial requirements and that corporate governance is of the highest standard; act as guardian of British Council reputation and assets, both tangible and intangible.”

Consumer Council for Water – Local Consumer Advocate

“Local Consumer Advocates are formally committee members, but are referred to as LCAs. They are allocated to the Committee that serves the consumers of their local water company. The primary role of a Local Consumer Advocate is to: advise and inform the Board on key consumer issues and to be a presence for the CCWater Board in the region; work with the local team to achieve CCWater’s objectives as set out in our Forward Work Programme; review customer complaint cases about local water companies when asked; from time to time members may be engaged, selectively, on policy development work with members of other committees and staff…”

Time: 4 days per month.

Remuneration: £4,510 plus expenses.

Centre for Data and Innovation – Board Members

“The use of data and AI is giving rise to complex, fast moving and far reaching economic and ethical issues. Increasingly sophisticated algorithms can glean powerful insights, which can be deployed in ways that influence or even manipulate the decisions we make, or target the services and resources we receive.  Moreover, new economic models are emerging, with data at their core, giving rise to questions around how we best incentivise and facilitate innovative, efficient and fair use of data. We need to be able to respond quickly and effectively to these and other emerging issues. This is why we are establishing the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation.  The Centre will identify the measures needed to strengthen and improve the way data and AI is used. This will include promoting best practice and advising on how we address potential gaps in our regulatory landscape.”

Home Office – Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner

“The role of the role of Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner (IASC) was established by the Modern Slavery Act 2015. The IASC has a UK-wide remit to encourage good practice in the prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of modern slavery offences and the identification of victims. The role was created to spearhead the UK’s fight against modern slavery. Key Responsibilities: to work closely with key Government delivery partners to drive a strengthened strategic response in their work to tackle modern slavery and the provision of appropriate support for victims; build positive relationships with and amongst the modern slavery leadership community, including Devolved Administrations, business, academia, civil society, international partners (as well as directly with victims of modern slavery) and facilitate the sharing of good practice in tackling modern slavery…”

Time: Full time.

Remuneration: £108,000 per annum.

Charity Commission – Board Members

“These three vacancies are senior roles requiring people with the necessary non-executive skills and experience to assist the Chair in providing strategic leadership and oversight of the Charity Commission.  The Commission’s work is highly varied and engages with people and institutions throughout England and Wales: the Board seeks to reflect that diversity in its composition. Successful candidates will have strong interpersonal, intellectual and analytical skills and sound judgement, together with a commitment to and appreciation of good corporate governance. Candidates with non-executive director (NED) and/or senior executive experience in the private, public and/or not-for-profit sector (including those for whom this would be a first board appointment) are encouraged to apply.”
