Last night, Conservative members in Blackpool South became the latest to select a candidate for their target seat.

Congratulations to Cllr Scott Benton, who won out against Cllr Christian Wakeford and Cllr Michele Scott. Our commiserations to the unsuccessful candidates.

Cllr Benton is Conservative Group Leader on Calderdale Borough Council, and works in the Parliamentary office of Craig Whittaker, the Calder Valley MP. Benton contested Huddersfield for the Conservatives at last year’s General Election. Unusually for a mainland politician, he was also the Conservative candidate for the Strangford constituency in the 2017 Northern Ireland Assembly election.

The incumbent MP, Gordon Marsden, currently holds Blackpool South for Labour with a majority of 2,523 votes.
