This week’s Champion Council is Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, which has frozen council tax rates for a third year running.
Following a consultation of local residents, Staffordshire Moorlands Council established that keeping council tax rates to a minimum must be their number one priority. They have achieved this through sharing a Chief Executive, services and back-office staff with High Peak Borough Council. Not only this, the council have improved frontline services, rather than cutting them. They have also made no compulsory redundancies in council staff, while reducing the payroll from 680 to 240.
Councils such as Staffordshire Moorlands are a testament to what councils can do to improve the lives of their residents while making savings. I hope that many more will do the same.
