I am delighted to see that Wirral Council, now against Conservative-led, is proposing a 3% cut in Council Tax.
The proposal would need the backing of the Lib Dems to be agreed at the next Council meeting on March 1st. But this seems likely.. They are supportive of Council Tax cuts – although they favoured it taking the form of a £25 rebate to each household which has a temporary feel about it.
The ousted Labour Council leader, Cllr Steve Foulkes, has attacked the proposal for a 3% Council Tax cut as "a gimmick" and "an election bribe." I always feel that talking about tax cuts as a "bribe" reflects a mentality that all money belongs to the Government and that letting us have any money at all is doing us a favour and that increasing the amount of money we are allowed to keep is a "bribe."
