A new technical college is to open with the grounds of the Silverstone motor racing circuit. The new college will specialise in engineering. There are 800 acres so it shouldn't be too much of a squash.
It is being set up with the help of Northampton University and will be among 13 University Technical Colleges opening next year. The UTCs are for 14-19-year-olds. The 14-16 year-olds spend about 60% of their time on mainstream academic subjects such as English and maths and 40% on technical studies.
Today will also see the announcement of 55 new free schools being approved for next year. I hope there will be may more. Those in today's list will include one for east London being run by the independent school Brighton College.
The schools revolution is certainly maintaining momentum. Last month saw 45 more schools apply to convert to become academies from all around the country (including Birmingham and Kent where the opposition of Tory councillors has had to be overcome.)
