Interviewed on Newsnight last night about the riots, 22 minutes 28 seconds into the discussion, Ken Livingstone said:
“If you’re making massive cuts, there’s always the potential for this sort of revolt against that”
Andrew Gilligan also notes that Livingstone has been claiming that police numbers are falling and offering that as an explanation. But by the end of Boris Johnson's first term there will be 1,000 more police than when Boris took over. Anyway the problem is not the number of police who are available. It has been reluctance to deploy them to stop the looting. Preventing looting does not mean we need to recruit more police but to make use of the ones that are already employed.
The rioters are to blame for the rioting. For Livingstone to be touring the TV studios seeking to blame others is grossly irresponsible.
