Cllr Shah Wazir, who represents Milkstone and Deeplish on Rochdale Council, has defected from the Lib Dems to the Conservatives. He is a former Deputy Leader of the council and his defection comes after his fellow member Cllr Mohammed Sharif switched from the Lib Dems to the Conservatives a month ago. Rochdale has a minority Labour administration – the defections bring the Conservative group to 13. A third of the seats are up for election on May 5.
Rochdale's Conservative Group leader, Cllr Ashley Deanley says:
“I am delighted that Councillor Wazir has decided to join us.
“The Conservative party is open to people of all races and religions who want to work in the best interests of the borough.”
