Tom Riordan, the Chief Executive of Leeds City Council, has taken a 5% pay cut. It means his salary will fall to £176,000. The decision follows Communities Secretary Eric Pickles call that those earning over £200,000 should take a 10% pay cut, while those earning over £150,000 should take a 5% cut.

A city council spokesman said:

"The chief executive's intention is to take a pay cut and the decision is his entirely. He is not responding to pressure from any quarter.

"Mr Riordan thinks it is the right thing to do, given the current financial climate and the need to reduce spending."
