A report in the Mail on Sunday that councils are to have more discretion over the criteria for housing priority. This would allow priority to those with established links to an area rather than immigrants going straight to the top of the list. There will still be require to find some kind of accommodation for the homeless.
Councils will also be able to take account of people putting their names down on more than one waiting list. The waiting list have five million names. But often people put themselves down on the waiting list for several councils.
These reforms sound sensible. They are localist. They will also help avoid some of the resentment that the BNP has exploited. But in my view we need to find new arrangement where housing allocation is not politicised and allocated by the Soviet system of queuing but by the market.
