One of the most deprived wards in England delivered a slap in the face for Labour after the Tories vastly increased their majority in a by-election in Diane Abbott's Constituency.

The Conservatives held one of the three seats in New River in Hackney by the thinnest of margins at the elections in May, just 39 votes ahead of.the Labour Party. After the by-election yesterday our majority increased to 560 and will be a huge embarrassment for Labour who were trying to make capital out of the Coalition Government's plans to deal with the deficit.

Labour had drafted in campaigners from all over the country with Ken Livingstone appearing on election day to try and rally support.

“If people believed Labour's rhetoric about the effect that the Coalition Government would have on the poor then this should have been an easy win for them” said victor Benzion Papier, 26, “but people realise who got us into this mess.”

Turnout 38.4% Benzion Papier (Conservative) 1,547 – Lab 1,007 – Green 77 – LD 61 – Independent 26.

The by-election was caused by the death of Cllr Maureen Middleton.
