Cllr Sir Richard Leese, has resigned as the Labour leader of Manchester City Council after being arrested for an allegation of assaulting his step daughter. The girl had a minor injury to her ear. The principle of innocent under proven guilty should be adhered to but Cllr Leese accepted a police caution which is an admission of guilt. Yet he seems to be remaining a Labour councillor and even apparently hopes to be restored as Council leader. The Labour Party say it is "a private matter." Breaking the law is not a private matter.
Cllr Leese was perhaps New Labour's favourite Council leader – after former Glasgow leader Steven Purcell. Communities Secretary John Denham as offered Cllr Leese as a role model for the rest of us. Last month I wrote about how Cllr Leese was offering dud advice and doing a rotten job.
