Waltham Forest Council is run by a Labour/Lib Dem coalition. It is a high tax authority with a Band D Council Tax of £1,151.21 after going up year after year. But this year it is being frozen. However if Labour and the Lib Dems believe this will be enough to claim there is no difference between them and the Conservatives on the issue they would be wrong.

The Conservative Group proposed an alternative budget, checked through by the Director of Finance. It would have meant a Council Tax cut of 2.3%.  Savings would have included £750,000 from the council’s
corporate communications department scrapping Waltham Forest News. Also saving £355,000 on CCTV vehicles, which enforce traffic regulations.

Cllr Matthew Davis, the Conservative Group leader, said:

“Having a large expensive corporate communications department makes no difference to residents' satisfaction levels at all.

“Our message is that the council should stop telling people how good it is and prove it by doing the things people want it to.”

This leaves the people of Waltham Forest with a clear choice on May 6. Let's hope Cllr Davis has the chance to implement his budget for real next year.
