Picture 12 News reaches me that the party board yesterday suspended Nicky Attenborough, the Conservative group leader in Bedford and Deputy Mayor there, for a period of two years for "actions not conducive to the aims and objectives of the Conservative Party".

She was one of the unsuccessful candidates for the Conservative nomination for mayor of Bedford – a contest which the eventual Conservative candidate, Parvez Akhtar, narrowly lost last week.

The reason given for her suspension was principally that having failed to win the nomination, she refused on a number of occasions publicly to endorse the Conservative candidate when asked to do so by the media. She then found herself quoted in the literature of the successful Lib Dem candidate and emails she wrote after the selection meeting were leaked to the local press.

She has a right of appeal.
