AAAPDAVIES_1 Peter Davies is the new Mayor of Doncaster.  He stood on an English Democrats ticket.  He's a former RE teacher and father of the non-conformist Tory MP for Shipley, Philip Davies.

The BBC has chosen to headline on the new mayor's opposition to Doncaster's Gay Pride festival:

"My policy on gays and lesbians is very simple. I don't think councils should be spending money on them parading through town advertising their sexuality."

The Yorkshire Post gives us a sampling of his other policies:

  • He campaigned "on reducing the mayor's salary from £62,000 to £30,000 and cutting the number of Doncaster councillors from 63 to 21."
  • An end to translation services for immigrants.
  • Scrapping of taxpayer-funded "non-jobs".
  • A pledge to cut the council tax by "cutting extortionate levels of bureaucracy".

It seems like a TaxPayers' Alliance manifesto to me.

Philip Davies MP commented:

"I am incredibly proud of him and what he has achieved. It's remarkable, to win an election like that from nowhere is really an astonishing achievement."
