Independent candidate Stuart Drummond, first elected in a monkey suit, has won a third term as Mayor of Hartlepool. Another independent candidate Ian Cameron came a close second. Drummond beating Cameron by 6,867 to 6,023 after second preferences were allocated. Labour came third with 2,291. The Conservative candidate Cllr David Young will have been disappointed to have come well further down the crowded field with 1,092.
I suspect that one problem for Cllr Young may have been that many Conservatives voted for Ian Cameron a taxi firm boss who stood on a thoroughly Conservative platform. Most eyecatching was his pledge to cut the Council Tax by 5% a year. His policies also included selling Hartlepool United's grounds to its owners (on the condition it remained a football club), reinstating weekly bin collections, repairing potholes, cutting bureaucracy and a tough approach to crime.
