The Lib Dem/Lab pact that runs Colchester Borough Council has been forced into a U-turn on its planned destruction of flower and shrub beds in the town after a huge public outcry.

The issue has caused considerable dismay in the town, which prides itself on its history and tourism, after national newspaper reports on ‘Shrubgate’ also featured on The Jeremy Vine show on BBC Radio 2.

Will Quince, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Colchester said:

"I campaigned against the Shrub Massacre from the outset because the decision to remove them was ill conceived.  I am delighted that the Lib Dem / Labour controlled Council have seen the light. This is a victory for local democracy and clearly demonstrates how local residents can get a Council to U Turn on a stupid decision.

"I am only sorry the matter had gone this far before the Lib Dem/Labour
Cabinet came to its senses. Having our great town featured in the
national press and media with this issue is a great shame but I am
confident tourists will flock toColchester now this mess has been cleared up."
