Last week I asked for Conservative alternatives to socialist suggestion from the National Housing Federation of a "crash programme" of state house building. Mark Wallace of the Taxpayers Alliance commented: "One thing that must be done is the barriers to repairing currently empty or derelict houses should be dropped. There are over 750,000 empty homes in Britain, and yet repairing them is hit with 15% VAT. Building a new house is VAT free but repairing an existing one gets you clobbered by the tax man. There's more information at "

Now the Local Government Association have taken up the call. When the LGA and the Taxpayers Alliance agree then it is time for the Government to sit up and take notice.
