The Guardian reports that new research from the Department of Transport will cast doubt on claims that reducing street lighting would mean increased traffic accidents. Edward Bunting, a senior policy adviser to the DfT suggests that the distraction of even temporary blinding of drivers by over-lighting needs greater consideration.

The report says more than 20 local councils have reduced street lighting. Although one of them Powys reinstated some of the street lighting they had cut back after concerns from residents.
