The Local Government Chronicle reports that Councils are considering cancelling their membership subscriptions to the Local Government Association in protest over its stance on Baby P. The paper says that it understands that "at least one large county council is prepared to cancel its membership" and "other councils are understood to share its concerns." A county council membership sub is over £100,000 a year.

When the LGA offers a kneejerk defence to the media of Councils like Haringey my feeling is rather reminiscent of those old anti Iraq War placards: "Not in my name." As I said when I posted in November suggesting Councils review their LGA membership it seems to operate like a trade union for Councils defending all Councils whether they are good or bad.

Kudos to Bromley Council in having pulled out of it back in 2002.
