Reports today from the Taxpayers Alliance about the number of Council staff earning an annual salary of over £50,000 having increased from 31,000 to 37,000 from 2006/7 to 2007/8. The figure represents 1.3% of the 2.9 million people employed by Councils. I actually think the defence offered by the LGA, that if you have people in charge of multi-million pound budgets then you have to pay competitive salaries, is reasonable. The point is to challenge the premise. Should Councils being spending such huge sums and employing so many people in the first place?
Andrew Boff: London is not a Labour city. We can win if we put in the effort and run the right campaign.
