Despite claiming earlier today that he couldn’t sack David Ward as a Liberal Democrat candidate, Tim Farron has now sacked David Ward as a Liberal Democrat candidate.

It’s a good decision – spurred, surely, by ConservativeHome’s call for him to do so this morning, and the pressure applied by Sir Eric Pickles at PMQs – but it would be nice if he hadn’t been selected in the first place.

There’s also the important question of whether Ward remains a member of the Liberal Democrats. Remember, Jenny Tonge was kept on as a member for years under the radar, even after having the whip withdrawn. It really shouldn’t be so hard for a political party to sweep itself clean of this kind of poison.
