During last night’s Newsnight coverage of the budget, former Labour strategist John McTernan came out with this gem:

There we have it – probably the most succinct and honest summary of the core philosophy of socialism that any of us will hear this year.

He was criticising the new freedom for savers to spend their pension money as they choose, but this patronising belief spreads across every part of the left. Whether they’re raising taxes, bullying people for eating sweets or herding savers, motorists and drinkers into the dairy to be duly milked of their cash, the theme is always the same:

“You can’t trust people to spend their own money sensibly.”
