6a00d83451b31c69e201310f97e3bd970c-500wi A week ago the Home Secretary Alan Johnson was openly discussing the possibility of introducing compulsory insurance for all dogs. One week later after opposition from the Conservatives (summed up in the poster above) the idea has been dropped today by Hillary Benn, Environment Secretary.

That must be one of the fastest u-turns in the dizzying history of this government.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling jumped on the about turn:

“This is a humiliation for Alan Johnson and makes him look like a complete fool. How on earth did he and the Home Office get themselves into a position where last week’s flagship announcement is this week’s political dog's dinner? No wonder Britain desperately needs change.”

Dog's dinner indeed. Alan Johnson is now retreating with his tail between his legs. More poodle than rottweiler. I'm sure you can think of a few more appropriate metaphors…
