Council by-election results from yesterday

The Conservatives held seats in New Forest and in Fylde. The Green Party gained a seat form an independent in Taunton Deane. The Lib Dems gained a seat from the SNP in the Highlands.

Paul Mercer: Police forces and councils seem to forget the reasons for the Prevent programme

For reasons of political correctness, its remit now covers far more groups, many of which are clearly not engaged in violent protest, let alone terrorism.

By Paul Mercer | 6 April 2018 at 6:10 am | 26 comments

Tim Pollard: In Croydon, Labour is going through a tortuous process to block the right to buy for future council tenants

They are also failing to bring local communities with them. Development must be attractive to win support for the new homes we need.

Tony Armstrong: Put local land and buildings into community hands to secure their future

While sales to private developers might bring immediate capital receipts the long term value of amenities must also be considered. A partnership approach is needed.

Will Labour be punished in Sheffield for chopping down thousands of healthy trees?

Ultimately it is the responsibility of the people of that city to vote to halt the ecological vandalism taking place on a huge scale.

John Bald: Yes, we need education research – but it must be competent

The Education Endowment Foundation is not impartial. It was an error to set it up and it should receive no more public money. Others are better suited to the challenge.

Council by-election result from yesterday

In the only contest taking place this week Labour held a set in Knowsley.

Judy Terry: In Suffolk, public services are working together to defeat gang violence

Security has tightened at nightclubs, and volunteers work with the Police to protect the most vulnerable youngsters as well as the homeless.

The local election results in London will provide a mixed picture

Pundits are expecting a drubbing for the Conservatives in the capital. But some boroughs will buck the trend. I predict unpredictability.

Guy Senior: Keeping Council Tax low and serving our people well is still the key message in Wandsworth

We are seeing 20,000 new homes, 25,000 new jobs, and the first new tube station in the borough for 90 years.

By Guy Senior | 28 March 2018 at 6:10 am | 10 comments

Sam Hearn: The folly at the heart of Labour’s record in Hounslow

Setting up a trading arm has proved a complete failure. 844 new homes were promised but so far not a single brick has been laid. The approach to recycling has also proved hopeless.

By Sam Hearn | 27 March 2018 at 6:10 am | 5 comments

Kevan Collins: Gathering evidence of what techniques work in the classroom should be welcomed

Setting or streaming tends to benefit high-attaining pupils, but this can be to the detriment of lower-attaining learners.

By Kevan Collins | 26 March 2018 at 6:10 am | 22 comments

Council by-election results from yesterday

The Conservatives lost seats to the Lib Dems in Aylesbury Vale and to Labour in Staffordshire Moorlands. But the Conservatives gained seats from UKIP in Thurrock and from an independent in Chiltern.

After Brexit, EU nationals in the UK should have the right to vote in local elections – so should all other permanent residents

The principle of “no taxation without representation” should apply. Why should a Swede be able to vote but not a Norwegian?

By Harry Phibbs | 23 March 2018 at 6:10 am | 65 comments

James Palmer: Solving the housing crisis needs proper infrastructure – Network Rail is holding us back

This wasteful bureaucratic behemoth is delaying the new stations we need. Conservatives should champion a radical approach with more competition.
