Congratulations to Cllr Julia Dockerill, who won tonight’s selection in Hornchurch and Upminster by an outright majority on the first ballot.

Here’s our brief bio of her from earlier this week:

A Conservative Councillor in Tower Hamlets since 2014, where she represents the ward of St Katharine’s and Wapping, Dockerill works in Parliament as Chief of Staff to Mark Field MP. Born and raised in Essex, she was co-author with Field of the books The Best of Times and Between the Crashes, and is currently working on a social and economic modern history of London called London in the Noughties.

Our sympathies go to the unsuccessful candidates, Simon Jones and Shaun Bailey, both of whom I’m told delivered very strong performances.

The constituency, vacated by Dame Angela Watkinson stepping down, had a Conservative majority of 13,074 votes at the 2015 General Election.
