The Government’s mismanagement of their motion to require a secret ballot to elect the Speaker led to an embarrassing defeat today by 228 – 222 votes. Some Conservative allies of the Speaker would likely always have voted against it, while others were driven to vote No by what they saw as an overmighty and inconsiderate Executive. Here is the full list of the 23 Tories who voted against the motion:

Sir David Amess

Bob Blackman

Peter Bone

Graham Brady

Conor Burns

Christopher Chope

Tracey Crouch

Philip Davies

David Davis

Cheryl Gillan

Zac Goldsmith

James Gray

Adam Holloway

Bernard Jenkin

Jeremy Lefroy

Sir Edward Leigh

Dr Julian Lewis

Jack Lopresti

David Nuttall

Jacob Rees-Mogg

Sir Richard Shepherd

Martin Vickers

Charles Walker
