Dan Hannan explains on his blog today how the main European parties are trying to establish the principle that the EU is a federation – “in which pan-Continental parties, after contesting elections on a common and binding manifesto, get to choose the federal executive”.
He adds that since the Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists doesn’t accept this principle it won’t be fielding a candidate. “We have no intention of legitimising a process which lacks both legal authority and popular support,” he writes.
